How I Helped Someone Make $100 During a Free Phone Consultation

I had a discovery call with a potential client the other day.

A discovery call is what you get when you click the “free consultation” button on my website.

Lots of folks are afraid to click that button because they’re afraid someone is going to try to sell them something.

On the discovery call I had the other day, I was able to provide someone who I’ve never met with a piece of advice that they were able to implement immediately, which generated a sale for them before the close of business that day.

How It Happened

Step 1: This Person Took Action

They took advantage of a free consultation, instead of being afraid to talk to somebody for fear of being sold to.

Step 2: Listening

I listened, because that’s how you learn how you can help someone.

I encourage you to apply active listening heavily in your discovery calls.

Step 3: Be Helpful

I provided a recommendation, based on my understanding of this person’s objectives.

I didn’t say “pay me some money, and then I can give you a quick piece of advice.”

I just gave a simple tip that I thought would be helpful.

Step 4: This Person Took Action AGAIN!

They immediately implemented my suggestion and made a sale from it about three hours later, with more sales to follow from that same action.

The Lessons

Don’t be afraid to talk to people.

Don’t be a afraid to take action.

Either of those things will prevent you from making money. The two of them combined will leave you without a chance of making money.

This person contacted me for a free consultation and ended up making money from that action within hours…and then paid to sign up for more services from me.

So we both won.

And since the sale they made means they delivered value to someone, that makes it a win/win/win!

You can create those win/win/wins for yourself and others all the time, if you go about things the right way.

Selling Is About Helping People Find a Solution

As a business owner, try to help, don’t try to sell.

As a business owner looking to grow, don’t be afraid to talk to people. There are people out here who can legitimately tell you something that you can monetize quickly. Their knowledge is worth your money because you can use it to make more money.

It not going to happen as quickly as this incident I’m describing. Those results are definitely not typical.

But there are plenty of folks out here who can help you turn their consulting fee into much more money in your bank account. But not if you’re scared to talk to them.

You have to invest in yourself to get a return. That’s how return-on-investment works.
